Viruses, Spyware and Adware

Info2005 saw an increase in spyware and adware to such an extent that these became Petrel Computer Consultants number 1 reason for reloading Windows XP on PCs.

Viruses have been very well contained during recent history and following these simple steps have all but eradicated virus outbreaks amongst Petrel Computer Consultants regular customers.

  • Run a reputable antivirus program, such as Trend Micro’s PC-cillin or OfficeScan
  • Update the virus definitions once or twice a week
  • Apply security patches to desktop software, Windows, Office and Internet Explorer at least once a week.
  • Delete suspicious email attachments without opening them.

All these precautions, however, still leave you vulnerable to spyware and adware. Fortunately there are a number of free resources to help you keep your computer free of these annoyances.

Once again these products are only effective if they are updated regularly and you don’t inadvertently install the spyware/adware yourself. A common trick to have you install the offending software is to offer a “free” program such as internet search bars, “smileys”, screensavers, time synchronizers or wallpaper.
